Madison Music Collective kicks off its Fall “Jazz on a Sunday” (JOAS) series with an edgy trio led by Matt Turner. Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading improvising cellists, Matt was last seen here in a JOAS performance for the Collective at the Brink Lounge with Randy Sabien’s Jazz Quartet. Matt is a highly versatile musician who has shared the stage with musicians ranging from Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster to avant-garde musicians like pianist Marilyn Crispell and guitarist Scott Fields, from country musician Wanda Vick to iconic jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin, from Kitty Brazelton’s chamber rockestra Dadadah to punk artist Kyle Fischer. Matt currently performs with jazz pianist Bill Carrothers’ Armistice 1918 Ensemble and with the Fantastic Merlins. For today’s concert, his trio mates will be pianist Greg Pagel and drummer Devin Drobka. As with the typical JOAS program, Matt’s concert will be followed by a facilitated Q&A session with the trio. 3:00 PM, Brink Lounge. http://madisonmusiccollective.org/.
