Big Bands – Jazz In Madison https://www.jazzinmadison.org The Spirit of Jazz is Alive in Wisconsin's Capital Wed, 15 Aug 2018 19:04:43 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.6.1 Panchromatic Steel https://www.jazzinmadison.org/portfolio/panchromatic-steel/ Sun, 26 Nov 2017 15:43:40 +0000 http://www.jazzinmadison.org/?post_type=portfolio&p=183974 Panchromatic Steel is Madison’s homegrown steeldrum band. Steeldrums, or “pans”, were first crafted in the 1940s from 55-gallon oil drums on the island of Trinidad and are heralded as the only acoustic musical instrument newly developed in the 20th century. The use of the pan became popularized in the musical styles of “calypso,” a folk music known for story-telling and social commentary, and “soca,” a high-energy dance music born of the 1960s that incorporated elements from Indian classical music as well as American funk. The instrument has also been applied to wide range of other musical styles, including jazz, classical, reggae and pop.

Founded in 2016 by Chad Bartell and Josh Pultorak, Panchromatic Steel hopes to honor the history of the steel pan by featuring standards of the idiom as well as creative and improvised music. In its first year, Panchromatic performed at The Edgewater Hotel, Art Fair On the Square, Capital Brewery, High Noon Saloon, The Nomad, Tyranena Brewing Company, Robinia Courtyard, The Harmony Bar, Alchemy, and Great Taste of the Midwest.

Based on what the entertainment calls for, the band can present itself in duo, combo, or full ensemble form. Contact: Chad Bartell, cgbartell@gmail.com

The band adds its own modern spin on the form, and also performs a number of bossa nova classics. Middleton Jazz https://www.jazzinmadison.org/portfolio/middleton-jazz/ Tue, 09 Aug 2016 17:39:30 +0000 http://www.jazzinmadison.org/?post_type=portfolio&p=174605 Middleton Jazz was started in 2009 as a semi-monthly jam session at the Middleton Senior Center. As players became more familiar with one another and with the music, the jam developed into a band. Middleton Jazz plays traditional jazz tunes, mostly in the ‘Dixieland’ style, with an emphasis on instrumental solos.

While traditional jazz provides the primary foundation, the band plays a variety of styles. Audiences are likely to hear songs from the Big Band era, Blues, Dixieland and ’50s Rock and Roll, performed by good ensemble work and fine soloists. Middleton Jazz is available for local events in and around the Middleton community such as private parties, holiday parties, corporate events, picnics, birthdays, anniversaries, retirements and the like.

The Ben Ferris Octet is a 8-piece, 5 horn ensemble that sounds as large as a big band and swings as tight as a trio. All That Jazz Big Band https://www.jazzinmadison.org/portfolio/all-that-jazz-big-band/ Fri, 04 Jul 2014 20:19:21 +0000 http://www.jazzinmadison.org/?post_type=portfolio&p=51423 The 20 piece All That Jazz Big Band was founded in 1985 by Bruce Johnson as a rehearsal band in his Middleton basement. With every dance or concert, ATJ proves what its members have learned in rehearsal – there is no better way to experience the Jazz Standards with a featured vocalist than in a live performance!

All That Jazz now features two more groups for smaller venues and smaller budgets. All That Jazz Classic Big Band is a 9-10 piece group with vocalist– all the swing with ½ the calories! All That Jazz Combo features 4-5 of our top players in a less formal setting.

Any of the All That Jazz groups can provide a unique mix of jazz literature. At a typical All That Jazz concert or dance, you will hear old standards as well as modern interpretations of jazz classics. We also throw in plenty of Latin tunes and ballads, even polkas, waltzes and rock to keep people of all ages tapping their toes or out on the dance floor!

All That Jazz Big Band is a regular feature at the Madison Art Fair on the Square and Tunes at the Monona Terrace, plays for the Badger Catholic Swing Dances, has opened a show for Rockapella, performed with singer and actor Tom Wopat, and has presented concerts at the Stoughton Opera House, Al Ringling Theatre, and the Monroe Performing Arts Center. All That Jazz gained national exposure on the CBS Early Show in a remote broadcast from the Monona Terrace. They have also performed for many festivals, concerts in the park series, weddings, conventions, anniversaries, and other area celebrations over the past 25 years.

Under current director Paul Heinecke, All That Jazz is also dedicated to an outreach program for the “next generation” of Jazz musicians, and has performed with and for high school and middle school students in Baraboo, Evansville, Madison, Mazomanie, McFarland, Mount Horeb, Reedsburg, Spring Green, Verona, Waunakee, and WI Dells, WI.
