This concert is a double-bill of two Madison-based trios. Playing all the saxophones as well as clarinet, and a long-time member of Tony Castañeda’s Latin Jazz Sextet, Anders Svanoe, http://www.anders.svanoe.com/, has performed with “free jazz” pioneer Roscoe Mitchell, pianists Vijay Iyer and Craig Taborn, and saxophonists Ari Brown and Evan Parker. He has composed two CDs of new works, ranging from Latin to mainstream to free, from which his trio (with bassist John Christensen and drummer Rodrigo Villanueva) will draw for this concert. In the opening set, contemporary organ trio Major Vistas (keyboardist Mike Weiser, guitarist Chris Bucheit, and drummer Geoff Brady) will perform original improvisational music that straddles the line between jazz and rock, much of it from their new album, “Minor Anthems,” http://www.majorvistas.com/. 7:30 PM, UW Memorial Union’s Frederic March Play Circle. Free admission. Co-produced by the Jazz Consortium, Madison Music Collective, and the Wisconsin Union Theater.
