Players of all experience levels are welcome.

This group workshop is intended for any instrumentalist or singer who wants to become more comfortable with improvisation, in any genre or setting. We will work through a variety of musical concepts, such as phrasing, note choice and interactive improvisation, to help you gain confidence in your improvisational playing. Registrants should have at least a basic level of competence on their instrument and be comfortable playing alongside others- beyond that, players of all experience levels are welcome.

Bring your instrument or your voice; one keyboard and one guitar will be provided for group use.

Please note there will be no class during Thanksgiving week.

About the instructor:
Wilder Deitz is a Madison-based musician and teacher. He leads two touring groups, the Wilder Deitz Singers and the Working Draft Trio, and performs regionally with his father, singer-songwriter Ritt Deitz. Wilder is the founder and director of the East, LaFollette, and Memorial Black Music Ensembles, three extracurricular high school groups dedicated to the study of music from the African-American tradition. Largely self-taught as a child, Wilder later studied music improvisation under NEA Jazz Master Richard Davis at the University of Wisconsin.
