Please join us this Saturday, June 8th, at 8pm at the Winnebago (2262 Winnebago St.), Madison’s fantastic new music venue, for a wonderful night of music featuring two great bands. First on the bill is the Anders Svanoe trio, with Anders on baritone saxophone, Brad Townsend on bass, and Rodrigo Villanueva-Conroy on drums. A lifelong Madisonian, Anders has performed with a who’s-who in the jazz and contemporary music scene, including a long and fruitful collaboration with Roscoe Mitchell, as well as artists such as Evan Parker, Corey Wilkes, Craig Taborn, Philipp Wachsmann, John Rangecroft, Vijay Iyer, Ari Brown and Gerald Cleaver.
Following Anders trio will be the Chicago-based quartet of saxophonist Mai Sugimoto, who will be playing with a fantastic band featuring bassist Katie Ernst, drummer Juan Pastor, and trumpeter Ben Phillips (who is originally from Middleton!). In 2018, Sugimoto released her debut quartet album, Born/Raised (Asian Improv Records) which was made possible by an artist grant from the city of Chicago. Sugimoto is an integral member of the Chicago-based quartet, Hanami, that has released two albums and appeared at the Chicago Jazz Festival. She often appears with bassist Tatsu Aoki’s ensembles, including the Fred Anderson Legacy Band and the Miyumi Project. Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune has described her as “a compelling performer” with “dry-champagne tone and lyrical lines.” Sugimoto channels inspiration from her Japanese and American musical roots into writing and performing with various groups.
Tickets for this event are $15 and are available at the door or in advance at the Winnebago’s website. This event is a collaboration with Arts + Literature Laboratory and the Isthmus Jazz Festival, and we’re very grateful to them for all their help!
