Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the original Nutcracker Suite as a ballet in 1892.  It has been arranged many times for different kinds of musical collaborations.

On Friday, December 6 at 7:30 PM two of those arrangements will be presented.  Madison Municipal Band will play an arrangement for concert band by James Curnow. At the same time, the Madison College Big Band will play the arrangement for jazz band by Billy Strayhorn and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

It will be interesting to compare/contrast the two approaches to some of the most beautiful music ever composed.

Madison College Jazz Ensemble will open the show with music by Fred Sturm and a beautiful arrangement of Skylark by Bob Brookmeyer.

This show will be at the Mitby theater, 3550 Anderson St, Madison, WI 53704.  Admission is free.

Madison College Big Band and Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jamie Kember, and traditional jazz big bands comprised of vibrant community members and active Madison College students. Madison Municipal Band is an auditioned ensemble comprised of musicians of all ages and ability levels from Madison College and its surrounding communities, directed by Professor Scott Teeple. Rehearsing weekly on Wednesday evenings, the mission of the ensemble is to contribute positively to the musical environment of the Madison College arts community and to the community at large through the performance of quality wind literature in a wide range of styles. The ensemble provides for its membership a continuing opportunity for personal involvement in the arts while fostering an environment for musical expression, appreciation, growth and collegiality. Participation is open to all wind, brass and percussion players by informal audition.
