A finalist in the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition and third prize winner in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition (the only male to win a top 3 prize in this prestigious competition’s history), 30-year-old Benny Benack III is a key part of the superlative group of young musicians breathing new life into New York City’s legendary jazz scene.
Here are two samples of Benny’s artistry in performances with several of these musicians: on trumpet from a recent house concert in Harlem (starting with the second tune, “On The Trail,” from the “Grand Canyon Suite”), and on vocals (“Social Call,” in a duo with Veronica Swift, with support from bassist Christian McBride and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.) from his most recent album, “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.” You can also hear his prize-winning performance at this year’s Sarah Vaughan competition, here.
For this return date at Café CODA, Benny will perform with a trio led by Jeremy Kahn, Chicago’s “first call” pianist for touring jazz musicians. A star in his own right, Jeremy was honored to be a featured guest on Marian McPartland’s long-running award-winning NPR program, “Piano Jazz.”
7:00pm, Café CODA, 1224 Williamson Street. $25 cover.
