Poncho Sanchez And His Latin Jazz Band Saturday, May 9th

The Wisconsin Union Theater’s 2014-15 Isthmus Jazz Series wraps up as percussionist Poncho Sanchez returns to Madison with a 9-piece band.  Drawing inspiration from the legendary collaboration of Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie, the Sanchez band fuses strong Latin elements with those of American jazz.  Growing up in L.A. with a range of influences, from John Coltrane to James Brown, Sanchez taught himself to play guitar, flute, drums and timbales, eventually finding true love with the congas.   8:00 PM, Shannon Hall, UW Memorial Union.  Samples of Sanchez’ music, and tickets, are available at  http://www.uniontheater.wisc.edu/season14-15/ponchosanchez-latin-band.html.
