The Fall “InDIGenous Jazz” series wraps up with a rare performance by Madison expatriate pianist Tim Whalen’s 9-piece little big band. The nonet includes many of our community’s top jazz players: saxophonists Al Falaschi, Tom Gullion, and Anders Svanoe; trumpeters Dave Cooper and Jon Schipper; and trombonist Darren Sterud, along with bassist Nick Moran and drummer Jamie Ryan. They will perform Whalen’s rich arrangements of new compositions as well as originals from the nonet’s live recording, Magnus. Of Whelan, internationally-renowned jazz pianist Kenny Barron wrote, “He is an exceptional player who fully understands the jazz language and is fully conversant with all genres of the music.” In addition to his own ensembles, Whalen has performed with jazz luminaries such as David “Fathead” Newman, Ambrose Akinmusire, Jon Hendricks, Richard Davis, and Ben Sidran, among others. 7:30 PM, UW Memorial Union’s Frederic March Play Circle. Free admission. Co-produced by the Greater Madison Jazz Consortium, Madison Music Collective, and the Wisconsin Union Theater.
