Madison Jazz Society opens its Winter-Spring season with the fifth edition of its bi-annual “Jazz Stars of the Future” concert showcasing Southern Wisconsin’s top high school jazz ensembles and the ways the Society’s School Grants Fund benefits student musicians. This year, the concert features performances by ensembles from Beloit Memorial, Sun Prairie and Verona High Schools (directed, respectively, by Christopher Berens, Steve Sveum, and Paul Heinecke). Thanks to underwriting from the Jazz Consortium and other local supporters, the Society will donate the proceeds from ticket sales to music departments at each of the three participating schools. Free admission for ages 18 and under. 1:00 PM, Coliseum Bar, 232 East Olin Avenue. www.madisonjazz.com/events/category/mjs-events/.
